ORCIA VALLEY ON WINGS

Vespa ride in Val d'Orcia & wine tasting at an estate near Montepulciano

What better way to experience Tuscany’s Dolce Vita than a spin on a Vespa? You’ll feel the thrill of winging your way across the Orcia Valley on the pillion of Piaggio’s iconic, ultra-practical, revolutionary creation.

First produced in 1946, the Vespa has become a symbol of Italy’s struggle to emerge from the wreckage of World War II. Piaggio – back then operating in the aeronautical field in Pontedera, near Pisa – was completely demolished by bombs during the conflict. Enrico Piaggio, son of Piaggio’s founder Rinaldo, decided to renew the factory in a way that would answer the country’s need for a modern and affordable means of transport. He engaged aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio to design a simple, robust, 2-passenger vehicle, easy to drive for both men and women with the aim of getting post war Italy moving again. Did you know that the word vespa means wasp in Italian? When Enrico Piaggio first saw Corradino’s invention he exclaimed “Sembra una vespa!” (It looks like a wasp!) – referring to the shape of the scooter and the noise of its engine.

You will begin your day with a pleasant ride by car or minivan to Pienza. Here your Vespa drivers will be waiting ready to lead you on a fun, chauffeured ride through the picture-perfect landscape of Val d’Orcia. Hop on the back of your Vespa and let the adventure begin!

Lying south of Siena, the Orcia Valley, with its verdant plains, gently rolling hills, fortified villages and rural landscapes has inspired a whole school of painting – the refined Siennese School which blossomed between the 13th and 15th centuries – and still delights visitors today having retained its pure, unspoiled allure. Val d’Orcia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 since it is “an exceptional reflection of the way the landscape was re-written in Renaissance times to reflect the ideals of good governance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture”. Wonderful panoramas, exquisite cuisine, top-class wine and towns that are still intact after hundreds of years make Val d’Orcia a must-see on your Tuscan exploration.

Take in the scent of cypress trees and the sight of golden sunflowers as you whizz across this splendid scenery. There’ll be ample opportunities for snapping shots of charming views as well as lively scenes of local life. Highlights include a stroll through the quaint medieval town of Monticchiello and a stop at a cheese-making dairy where you may treat yourself to a tasting of their irresistible pecorino.

Enjoy some free time for lunch in Montepulciano, whose beautifully preserved historic centre and widely celebrated gastronomic specialities make it a must-see, before rejoining your Vespa drivers to reach the last stop on your excursion.

At a renowned wine estate you will dip into the secrets of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The different stages in the wine-growing process will be explained, as well as the distinctive characteristics of the terroir and climate that make wines produced here so special. You will also learn about the strict regulations that define Vino Nobile, including which grape varieties and blends are allowed, together with the legal requirements for ageing in oak barrels. Top off your day with a wine tasting and a toast before returning to your accommodation by private car or minivan.
