FASHION QUEEN

Browsing with a personal shopper

Florence has made an indisputable contribution to the world of fashion and played a prominent role in the history of the Italian textiles industry. The city has been a leader in design since the Middle Ages, when wealthy merchants created powerful wool and silk guilds but it was during the Renaissance that Florence’s fashion industry blossomed. Aristocratic families began investing huge sums of money on clothing inspired by trendsetter Catherine de’ Medici, who went on to become the Queen of France and was considered to be one of the most fashionable women in Europe.

As you roam the historic centre you will see evidence of the city’s illustrious past in the names that have been given to its streets which recall clothing and textile trade: Corso dei Tintori (Dyers Avenue), Via dei Velluti (Velvet Road), Via Calimala (Fine Wool Road), Via dei Calzaiuoli (Shoe-maker Road). You may not know that Italy’s first fashion parades were held in the early 1950s in Florence and were staged in the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti. Florence is also the birthplace of prestigious brands including Salvatore Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli and Gucci. Exquisite craftsmanship, originality, innovation and glamour are still distinguishing features of Florence’s young creative brands today.
