CHEERS TO THE FABULOUS FIVE

Day trip to the Cinque Terre with a visit to a winery

Drink in the beauty of the Ligurian Riviera on this full-day excursion from Portofino. Guests will explore one of Italy’s most spectacular destinations and enjoy tasting fine Sciacchetrà at a renowned winery.

The Cinque Terre, meaning five lands, is a rugged, scenic portion of coastline stretching for eighteen kilometres to the west of the city of La Spezia that comprises five seaside villages. Along the steep cliffs lie Riomaggiore, a jumble of narrow alleys flanked by pastel-hued tower-houses; Manarola, a splash of colour clinging to a rocky headland; Corniglia, perched precariously on the edge of a 100-metre-high promontory; Vernazza, with its tiny port dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle; Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the Cinque Terre, graced by a sandy bay and famed for its lemon orchards and anchovies.

Dramatically strung between sea and land, these fishing and farming villages are linked by trains, boats and panoramic coastal and hillside hiking trails and are mostly inaccessible to vehicles. These circumstances have helped to preserve their distinctive atmosphere and timeless, magical appeal. Breathtaking views, crystal blue waters, gastronomic delicacies and a unique historic and artistic heritage have all contributed to the worldwide popularity of this delightful corner of Liguria.

You will meet your driver in Portofino and set off for the train station in Levanto. Here your private guide will be waiting ready to lead you on an unforgettable exploration of three of the fabulous five’s famous towns. Depending on weather, sea conditions and the number of visitors present, you may travel either by train or public ferry boat – or both.

You will also enjoy a visit to a local winery and get a feel for the advantages and difficulties of living in this territory that is both enchanting and demanding. Indeed, the slopes of the Cinque Terre are out of bounds to tractors and mechanical machinery therefore most of the wine-making process must be entrusted to the expert hands and knowledge of man alone. As you will have the opportunity to taste, these gargantuan efforts reward us with exquisite wines.

The property you will visit is located on the steep hills above Riomaggiore so be prepared for a 20-minute walk up a sharply rising slope. The climb is fairly arduous but the stupendous views provide all the incentive you need to reach your destination. The perks at the finishing line also make the effort well worthwhile. The friendly, dedicated owner will greet you and give you an introduction to the activities carried out on the estate, well-known for its honey-flavoured passito. You will then be led on a tour of the terraced vineyards. Here you will learn about the wine-growing process, discover which varieties are best suited to this terroir and understand why the particular combination of sunlight, mild weather and salty sea breeze plays a decisive role in the production of Ligurian wine. The splendid position in which the vines grow is a godsend for the grapes and a feast for the eyes, though a massive challenge for vine workers. Everything here, from planting to pruning, from selecting grapes to crushing, is accomplished manually.

Once you have completed the tour you will be better able to appreciate the true fruits of this delectable experience. Head downhill back to Riomaggiore and reach the estate’s cantina. Here you can view a short informative video about the history and traditions of wine-making before topping off your day with a tasting of the estate’s wine paired with cheese.

Your chauffeur will pick you up in the evening and drive you back to Portofino.
