This is Tavolara, the smallest kingdom in the world. In 1807 a certain Giuseppe Bertoleoni settled here and for several years was the island’s only inhabitant. Three decades later, according to popular lore, taking advantage of a visit to the area by Italy’s King Carlo Alberto, Giuseppe proclaimed himself ruler of Tavolara and managed to obtain royal consent to the island’s independence. Although no written document attests to this event ever taking place, the current descendant of Giuseppe still defines himself King of Tavolara.
