A NEVERENDING STORY FOR FOODIES

Cooking class & lunch at a farmhouse near Sorrento

Bite into Sorrento’s culinary traditions on this hands-on cooking class. Gourmands will learn how to make a delicious meal in true Campanian style. By savouring local flavours they will have the chance to appreciate the region’s long established and widely praised gastronomic heritage.

Food has always been an essential component of Italian culture. Gastronomy has been lauded in literature and poetry, inspired proverbs, shaped language and continues to stimulate tourism. Indeed the Sorrentine peninsula has attracted visitors since ancient Roman times with its enticing specialities. The region was considered a fashionable holiday resort by wealthy patricians, who were drawn here not only by the ravishing landscapes and glorious weather but undoubtedly also for the mouth-watering treasures of its generous earth and the bounty of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The abundance of fresh fish, the tasty meat supplied by wild boar and the locally raised pigs, the mineral-rich soil, ideal for agriculture and vine-growing, and the flavoursome milk provided by a particular breed of cattle must all have contributed to the popularity of Sorrento as a prime holiday destination for foodies.

Inside a farmhouse, under the guidance of your cooking instructor, you will learn how to select and combine prime quality local ingredients and pick up some precious tips on the region’s celebrated cuisine.

You will meet your private driver outside your accommodation in Sorrento and take a short ride to the farmhouse. Here, begin your day with a visit to the gardens and an introduction to the activities carried out on the six-hectare estate. Basil, rosemary, lemons, olives, eggplants and cauliflower are part of a wide array of produce all lovingly and respectfully grown in an earth-friendly environment, exquisitely cooked and served to the guests of its zero-food-mile restaurant. Home grown fare is also used to create the farm’s own limoncello, marmalades and extra virgin olive oil.

Pick the seasonal herbs and vegetables needed for the cooking lesson, head for the kitchen, tie your apron strings and enjoy an authentic Campanian cooking class. You will discover the importance of cooking and eating seasonally, as your instructor guides you through the preparation of a starter, a first course, a second course and a dessert. After the lesson take your seat in the farm’s restaurant and indulge in a well earned meal, washed down with a glass of wine. As a regional saying goes: “Si vuò campà anne e annune, vive vino ‘ncopp’ ‘e maccarune” – if you want to live a long life, drink wine and eat maccheroni. Tuck in!
